Abstract

Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) is a cluster of metabolic disorders that increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Police officers, with heavy workloads and long working hours, are susceptible to MetS. This study aims to analyze the association of personal characteristics, work system, and lifestyle with MetS among police officers at Bandung Wetan Sector Police. This study employed a cross-sectional analytical survey design with a population of 55 police officers. A sample of 39 respondents was included. Data were collected through interviews and physical examinations (waist circumference, blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol). Bivariate analysis used the Chi-Square test with continuity correction. Results showed that 41% of respondents had metabolic syndrome, with central obesity (76.9%), hyperglycemia (71.8%), and hypertension (53.8%) as the dominant components. Personal factors (age, family history of disease) highest education level, and income showed no significant association. Likewise, work duration, work location, and smoking habits were not significantly associated. However, job stress was significantly associated with MetS (p=0.001; OR=98.27; 95% CI=4.99–1934.39). In terms of lifestyle factors, inappropriate sleep duration (p=0.001; OR=1551.0; 95% CI=29.27–82197.60), physical inactivity (p=0.966; OR=181.29; 95% CI=8.69–3781.87), low consumption of fruits and vegetables (p=0.046; OR=16.92; 95% CI=0.84–340.28), and high consumption of risky foods (p=0.006; OR=29.10; 95% CI=1.50–565.47) had a statistically significant association with the incidence of MetS. In conclusion, metabolic syndrome is a significant health issue among police officers, strongly influenced by job stress and lifestyle. Comprehensive interventions focusing on stress management and lifestyle improvement are highly necessary.
