Abstract

The prevalence of malnutrition and overnutrition remains high among Indonesian children. The School Meals Program is a national policy aimed at improving children's welfare and development. The success of welfare and development can be seen through good nutritional status and cognitive function. Elementary school children suffering from poor health and nutrition experience physiological changes that interfere with their cognitive development. This study aims to determine the nutritional status and cognitive function of elementary school children receiving the school meal program in Kota Tengah District, Gorontalo City, through a quantitative descriptive method involving 147 fifth-grade students in two elementary schools in Kota Tengah District, using a total sampling approach. Nutritional status data were obtained by measuring weight and height, while cognitive function data were collected through the Mini Mental State Pediatric Examination questionnaire. Univariate data analysis was performed using frequency distribution. The results showed that students with normal Weight/Height Indicator (35.4%), wasted (32.0%), obesity (23.1%), and overweight (9.5%). None of the students were severely wasted. The Body Mass Index/Age indicator showed students with normal nutrition (58.5%), obesity (17%), underweight (12.9%), and overweight (11.6%). The cognitive function results showed that 100.0% of students had good cognitive function. Most students had normal nutritional status and all students had good cognitive function in both schools, although cases of underweight and obesity were still found in some students. As a recommendation, the school meal program should be evaluated regularly to observe significant changes in nutritional status and cognitive function.
